(5) Agnieszka Radwanska vs Garbine Muguruza
Agnieszka Radwanska and Garbine muguruza will go head to head for the second time in 2015 when they square off for a place in the quarter-finals at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Wednesday. The contrast in styles between these two always makes for a fascinating encounter, this one promises to be thoroughly entertaining.
After receiving a bye into the second round, Agnieszka Radwanska broke a string of three consecutive losses by defeating Caroline Garcia 6-3 2-6 6-3. Aga struggled on court with some kind of virus and was clearly not at her best, but the Pole managed to battle through the pain to advance to the third round in Dubai.
Aga won the opening set relatively comfortably before her level deteriorated significantly in the second set, allowing Garcia to find a way back into the match. Aga’s performance in the third set was clinical, dropping just two points on serve and closing out the match with a love service hold featuring three aces.
Garbine Muguruza’s solid start to the season has continued in Dubai. After coming from a set down to defeat Jarmila Gajdosova in the opening round, Garbine thumped Jelena Jankovic 6-3 6-1 to set up a third round clash with Radwanska.
Garbine totally dictated play from start to finish against Jankovic, taking advantage of the Serb’s rusty form and lack of concentration. Muguruza’s powerful groundstrokes frustrated Jelena who seemingly conceded defeat midway through the second set. Garbine will take a lot of confidence into her third round match, she knows she has the game to defeat Aga.
Radwanska holds a 2-1 head to head record over the young Spaniard, however it was Muguruza who prevailed in their most recent encounter in Sydney just over a month ago. Garbine produced an impressive performance to come from a set down and win 3-6 7-6 6-2. Garbine really went after her shots in that match and her aggression paid off as she eventually overpowered Radwanska from the baseline.
I think Garbine will have the edge in this match, the Spaniard’s game matches up well against Aga. Garbine is one of few players that has the ability to hit Aga off the court. Garbine has been playing really well over the last month and comes into this match full of confidence after her recent victory over the Pole. Aga hasn’t been in the greatest form of late and is currently struggling with a virus, it is therefore doubtful that Aga will be able to produce a performance good enough to defeat an in form Muguruza.
Prediction: Garbine Muguruza to defeat Aga Radwanska in 3 sets
