Toronto R2: (6) Agnieszka Radwanska vs (LL) Julia Goerges
Agnieszka Radwanska will kick-start her title defence at the Rogers Cup on Wednesday night when she comes up against Julia Goerges on Centre Court.
Radwanska started her U.S Open series in Stanford last week, the Pole was ousted by Angelique Kerber in the quarter-finals. Although the Radwanska lost, there were a number of positives to take out of the match. Radwanska played sublime tennis for the majority of the match, coming up with several magical shots. However Aga’s physical strength let her down in the end.
This is a big month coming up for Aga, the Pole will want to come as close to defending her title as possible. Aga will then have her eyes set on a big U.S Open, her least successful Grand Slam.
Julia Goerges made the most of her lucky loser spot in the main draw. The German defeated Zarina Diyas 2-6 6-1 7-5 in topsy-turvy encounter. Goerges will come into this match with confidence and with nothing to lose, she knows she has the game to trouble Radwanska if she plays her best tennis.
Radwanska has a 2-1 head to head record over Goerges. However, in their most recent encounter Goerges famously knocked Radwanska out of the 2012 Olympics in the first Round in London. Radwanska won their two previous encounter in straight sets, both on a hard court.
Radwanska will be focused heading into this one, desperate to start to her title defence in style and for some revenge over Goerges. Expect Aga to be too classy for the inconsistent German.
Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska to defeat Julia Goerges in 2 sets
