Agnieszka Radwanska vs Mirjana Lucic-Baroni Australian Open R2 Preview

Australian Open, ?? Second Round Match preview
(3) ?? Agnieszka Radwanska vs ?? Mirjana Lucic-Baroni

Agnieszka Radwanska is still searching for an elusive maiden Grand Slam title. The Polish world number 3 will be making one last push over the next couple of seasons to achieve her ultimate goal. The Australian Open has been Aga’s second most successful slam having reached the semi-final stage on two previous occasions, Aga will be hoping to go one step better in 2017 and she should have little trouble on Thursday evening against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Radwanska navigated her way through a difficult opening round clash on Tuesday night on Rod Laver Arena, claiming a 6-1 4-6 6-1 win over Tsvetana Pironkova. Radwanska was in total control in the opening set but her level dipped slightly in the second set, and Tsvetana Pironkova took full advantage. Aga’s concern was her extremely weak second serve which allowed Pironkova back into the match when the Pole’s first serve percentage dropped. Aga will be hoping for a more consistent performance on Thursday, as Lucic-Baroni is another dangerous opponent that she will not want to allow into the match.

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni arrived in Melbourne having not reached the second round stage since 1998. The Croatian broke that incredible drought with an extremely hard-fought 4-6 6-3 6-4 win over Qiang Wang. It was an extremely tight final set between Lucic-Baroni and Wang, just one break of serve was enough for the 34-year-old to sneak through to the next round.

Radwanska has won the only two previous matches between the pair, interestingly both started with a tight opening set before the Croatian retired in the second. There is a huge contrast in styles in this match-up, Radwanska relies on court craft, consistency and touch whilst Lucic-Baroni relies on power and being very aggressive. I doubt Lucic-Baroni has it in her to challenge Radwanska at this stage of her career. The Pole is far too fit and far too consistent and should get through this easily.

Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska to defeat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in 2 sets
