Qatar Total Open, Doha R1 Preview
?? Agnieszka Radwanska vs ?? Mona Barthel

Agnieszka Radwanska begins her Qatar Total Open campaign on Monday with an opening round clash against Germany’s Mona Barthel. Radwanska has made a mediocre start to the season and will be hoping to gain some much needed confidence and momentum in Doha. Radwanska has a good record in Doha and a perfect record against Barthel, this looks like a nice first round match-up for the Pole.

Radwanska has a good record in Doha. The 28-year-old has reached the semi-final stage in Doha on 5 previous occasions. Radwanska’s ranking continues to slide, at 33 in the world, Radwanska is now looking at not being seeded for the big events coming up over the next few months, a rare situation for the former world number 2. Radwanska’s start to the season was fitting of her next ranking, a couple of quarter-final appearances in Auckland and Sydney before being upset in the third round of the Australian Open by Su-Wei Hsieh.

Mona Barthel continues to struggle to make the most of her talent, the German has lost 15 of her last 18 tour level matches including 4 defeats from 5 matches in 2018. Barthel was beaten by Cornet In straight sets last week in the opening round at St. Petersburg and will look to ignite her season with a big win over Radwanska in the opening round in Doha.

Radwanska has won both of the previous matches between the pair, both ended in 3 sets, including a 4-6 6-1 6-4 win in Beijing in 2015 in their most recent match.

  1. Aga the professor! I think this will be a straight sets win for Aga and a potentially mouthwatering r2 matchup against Kvitová awaits. I actually think Aga could go deep this week. If she gets passed a few tricky rounds, she could face Svitolina and she owns her. Aga could very well make her 6th semi in Doha and face a stern test in Woz or Kerber or maybe even Sharapova. Aga is my pick for the title but I also think Halep is going to be a tough contender. 🙂

  2. I know! It’s certainly an emotionally biased pick as I’m a big fan. Let’s hope the match against Petra is a good one if nothing else.
