Australian Open R3: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska vs Monica Puig
Agnieszka Radwanska’s quest for a maiden Grand Slam title continues on Friday when she takes on Monica Puig in the third round at Melbourne Park. Both Radwanska and Puig have been in great form during the Australian summer and will enter this clash full of confidence.
Agnieszka Radwanska has strolled through her opening matches in Melbourne with relative ease. The Pole started the week with a comfortable 6-2 6-3 victory over Christina McHale before having to work a little harder for a 6-4 6-2 victory over the potentially dangerous Eugenie Bouchard. Aga is now on a 10 match winning streak and has won her last 5 matches in straight sets. Aga will be hoping for another straight set victory here as she looks to conserve her energy for the later stages of the tournament.
Monica Puig also brings winning form into this match, having won 9 of her last 10 matches after coming through the qualifying draw and reaching the final in Sydney last week. Puig started her Australian Open campaign with an emphatic 6-3 6-0 victory over Magda Linette before being forced to work infinitely harder for a 4-6 7-6 9-7 victory over Krystina Pliskova in the second round. It was an incredible match, Pliskova fired 31 aces past Puig and had 5 match points but couldn’t get the job done, an extremely gutsy victory by Puig in the end.
This will be the first career meeting between Aga and Puig. I suspect this will be a good match-up for Aga, Puig is solid but lacks any real weapons to trouble the Pole. Radwanska has far more variety and experience and is just far more consistent in every way. Aga should win this pretty comfortably.
