Agnieszka Radwanska vs Petra Martic, U.S Open R1 Preview

US Open, ????? R1 Preview + Prediction
(10) ?? Agnieszka Radwanska vs ?? Petra Martic

Agnieszka Radwanska will begin her 2017 U.S Open campaign with a potentially dangerous opening round clash against Croatia’s Petra Martic. The U.S Open has traditionally been one of Aga’s least successful major tournaments and Pole has generally been far from her best in 2017. However, Radwanska showed signs of improvements last week in New Haven and in a field that is quite open, Radwanska may be able to go on her first deep run at a Grand Slam in 2017. Radwanska has a perfect 2-0 record over Martic, nevertheless, the Croatian has shown in 2017 that she is a threat at major tournaments.

Agnieszka Radwanska never made it past the fourth round in New York, the only Grand Slam where she has failed to reach the quarter-final stage. Radwanska has also not made it past the fourth round during the first three Grand Slams of the year, 2010 was the last year that Radwanska did not make it the quarter-final stage of a Grand Slam. The Pole arrives in New York in decent form after reaching the semi-final stage in New Haven. Radwanska claimed a few solid straight set wins over Eugenie Bouchard and Peng Shuai before succumbing to Daria Gavrilova in straight sets. It will be interesting to see if Radwanska can bring some vintage form to New York.

Petra Martic has gone on some fantastic runs at the Grand Slam level in recent times. At Roland Garros, Martic came through the qualifying draw to reach the fourth round and did the same thing at Wimbledon. This time around, Martic is straight into the main draw and straight away faces the 10th seeded Radwanska. Martic’s runs at the last couple of Grand Slams will give her confidence heading into this match.

Radwanska won the only two previous matches between the pair, both were 6-3 6-4 wins on a hard court in 2011. I suspect Radwanska will again get the better of Martic here. Martic is the type of player that Radwanska traditionally feats on, a powerful, somewhat one dimensional hitter. Radwanska will have too much variety and stamina here and should be good enough to avoid a disastrous first round exit in New York.

  1. Wtaddict,

As Ash Barty seems to have the better performance(W/L) rec on hard in 2017. with 21/6 for Barty vs 10/8 for Konjuh, Barty should win in 3 sets. Konjuh being the more talented player will win but may lose as she is not in form besides carrying some kind of injury. Konjuh retd. against Flipkens @ Toronto. Besides, she is too heavy (around core=causes hip & knee injuries) to move swiftly for 3 sets with injury! Konjuh needs to slim down like Kerber and Halep to be active on court and win.

How will Timea Babos defeat Viktorija Golubic in 2 sets? Golubic is a very powerful left handed player and she will trouble an inconsistent but fast rising Babos with her power serves and smashing GS winners and win atleast a set. Don’t you think. If Golubic wins, i will not be surprised at all.

I know that Babos has a slightly better momentum coming in here with 2 win in 5 matches vs 0/1 for Golubic. But, both their hard records in 2017 on hard is pathetic.

Their only H2H match went to 3 sets-1-6, 6-4, 7-5 in 04/2016 on I.Hard. Same can happen today, right?

Wtaddict, I am doubtful of the below 3 matches.

    Why will?-

    1) Carina Witthoeft to defeat (16) Anastasija Sevastova in 3 sets???

Can’t Anastasija Sevastova the more experienced and powerful girl win?

    2) Oceane Dodin to defeat Pauline Parmentier in 3 sets???

    Can’t Pauline Parmentier upset Dodin?

    3) Ajla Tomljanovic to defeat Johanna Larsson in 3 sets???

Johanna Larsson with more experience should beat Ajla Tomljanovic in 2 or 3 (mostly) sets, right?

A quick reply with detailed logic will greatly help me place a couple of bets confidently. Matches to start in the next 45 minutes.
