Toronto QF: (6) Agnieszka Radwanska vs (2) Simona Halep
The Rogers Cup quarter-final line-up is quite disappointing, the clear exception is the blockbuster match between defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska and world number three Simona Halep. This promises to be an extremely close and entertaining battle between two players who usually bring out the best in each other.
Agnieszka Radwanska has made a promising start to her U.S Open series campaign. The Pole played some sublime tennis in Stanford last week and has now made a positive start to her title defence in Toronto. Radwanska overcame a stern challenge in her opening round match, raising her game in the important moments to defeat Julia Goerges 7-5 6-3. The Pole booked her spot in the final 8 with an extremely hard fought 6-2 4-6 6-4 victory over Alize Cornet. Aga was in trouble in the final set, but rallied to win the last 4 games of the match.
Simona Halep advanced to the final eight courtesy of a marathon 6-3 5-7 6-4 victory over Angelique Kerber on Thursday. In what was arguably the match of the tournament thus far, Simona just outlasting a fatigued Kerber in a gruelling baseline battle. Halep seemed delighted with the victory, a win that could perhaps be a turning point in season 2015 for the Romanian.
Halep will be confident heading into this match given her recent record against the Pole. Radwanska holds a 4-3 head to head record over Simona, however the Romanian has won 3 of their last 4 encounters, including their most recent match, a comprehensive 6-2 6-2 victory in Singapore late last year. Halep has shown that she is one of few players that can outlast Radwanska from the baseline.
This is a difficult match to call, both ladies have struggled at different stages in 2015 but both have shown promising signs in their first two matches in Toronto. Halep’s movement is arguably just as good as the Pole’s, the Romanian’s ability to be more aggressive usually gives her the edge in this matchup. However I’m still not convinced Simona is over her recent form slump, Aga’s consistency and slightly more reliable serve will get her the win.
Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska to defeat Simona Halep in 3 sets
