(6) Agnieszka Radwanska vs (18) Venus Williams
Agnieszka Radwanska continues her quest for an elusive maiden Grand Slam title on Monday where she faces seven time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams in the fourth round at Melbourne Park. This promises to be a sensational match between two ladies desperate to succeed.
Aga has cruised through to the second week at Melbourne Park, her fifth consecutive appearance in the second week at the Australian Open.
Radwanska reached the fourth round with a
6-0 7-5 victory over Varvara Lepchenko, avenging her two losses to the American last year. Radwanska waltzed through the opening set in just 25 minutes, hitting 11 winners to just 1 unforced error in a totally commanding performance.
Aga was forced to work much harder in the second set as Lepchenko began to raise her level. Aga failed to serve out the match at 5-3, her groundstrokes lost some pace and depth allowing Lepchenko to dictate play. Aga rebounded, breaking in the twelfth game with a sensational drop shot.
Venus Williams made it eight consecutive victories to begin 2015, with a hard fought 4-6 7-6 6-1 victory over Camila Giorgi.
Camila Giorgi played incredibly well in the opening set and a half, extreme power and depth allowing her to race to a 6-4 4-2 lead.
The seventh game of the second set would prove to be the turning point in the match. Venus found herself down 0-40 but managed to fight her way to a service hold to remain within touching distance. At 5-4 Giorgi served for the set but a wayward service game handed Venus a love service break.
In the second set tiebreaker, the Americans superior experience and composure under pressure was on display as she sent the match to a deciding set. Venus totally dominated in the third set, dropping just one game. Venus will be forced to work much harder for her points on Monday when she comes up against Agnieszka Radwanska.
Venus Williams has a slender 5-4 head to head record over Agnieszka Radwanska, however it is Aga who has emerged victorious in their three most recent encounters. Their most recent encounter was in the final of Rogers Cup last year, it was Radwanska who breezed past a fatigued Williams 6-4 6-2 to claim her first title of the year.
This promises to be a fascinating encounter, I believe Radwanska will ultimately prevail. Aga’s superior movement and fitness is a big factor in this matchup. Furthermore Venus has lost a lot of power over the years, especially on her serve, I doubt she can hit past a determined Radwanska.
Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska to defeat Venus Williams in straight sets
