Ana Konjuh vs Daria Gavrilova, Australian Open R2 Preview

Australian Open, ?? Second Round Match preview
(22) ?? Daria Gavrilova vs ?? Ana Konjuh

Daria Gavrilova will face a big challenge when she meets Ana Konjuh at the second round stage of the Australian Open on Thursday evening. At just 19 years of age, Ana Konjuh is perhaps the most exciting young talent on the WTA tour and will be looking to continue her strong form at the Grand Slam level after at a quarter-final showing at the U.S Open last year. Gavrilova will need to be at her very best to get through this match given Konjuh’s strong form.

Daria Gavrilova is fast becoming a crowd favourite at Melbourne Park. The adopted Aussie played some of her best tennis at the event last year when she reached the fourth round stage and will be hoping to emulate that performance at this year’s tournament. Gavrilova got off to shaky start on Tuesday, the Aussie edged past Naomi Broady 3-6 6-4 7-5 to set up a second round clash with Konjuh.

Ana Konjuh was far more convincing in her opening round victory, claiming a comfortable 6-4 6-2 win over Kristina Mladenovic. The young Croatian showed maturity beyond her years in the opening set, saving numerous break points to remain perfect on serve. Konjuh’s mental strength is already a weapon despite her relative inexperience. The Croatian is in great form having reached the final in Auckland in her only tournament of the year.

This will be the first career meeting between Gavrilova and Konjuh. I suspect the Croatian will be too strong for Gavrilova on this occasion. Most of the expectations will be placed on the home crowd favourite but Konjuh is the better player and if she plays at a high level she will simply be too strong for Gavrilova. The only thing Gavrilova does better on a court is move better but Konjuh has a better serve, strong groundstrokes and a better game at the net. The Croatian should win this if she keeps her composure and doesn’t feel rushed because of Gavrilova’s movement.

Prediction: Ana Konjuh to defeat Daria Gavrilova in 2 sets
