Ana Konjuh vs Irina-Camelia Begu, Wimbledon R2 Preview

Wimbledon ???? Day 3, R2 Match Preview:
(27) ?? Ana Konjuh vs ?? Irina-Camelia Begu

In an interesting second round clash at SW19 on Wednesday sees the 27th seeded Ana Konjuh take on Romanian: Irina Camelia Begu. Konjuh and Begu both rocketed through their opening round clashes on Monday in straight sets. Ana Konjuh is one to look out for at Wimbledon, the young Croatian’s game is perfectly suited to grass and given the wide open nature of the draw there is potential for Konjuh to cause great damage over the next fortnight.

Ana Konjuh has proven that her best tennis is very good, however her inconsistency throughout tournaments and even throughout matches have seemingly held her back in 2017. Konjuh got off to a great start at SW19 on Monday, easily accounting for former finalist Sabine Lisicki with a 6-1 6-4 win. Begu was also a big winner on day 1, beating Naomi Broady 6-4 6-2.

The only previous match between Konjuh and Begu took place at Roland Garros in 2015, Begu crushed Konjuh 6-2 6-0. I suspect Wednesday’s second round clash at SW19 will be very different.

Konjuh should have a clear edge on this surface in this match-up. Konjuh has a much more effective game on this surface with her huge, flat groundstrokes and willingness to be aggressive and mover forward. Begu’s game plan is usually not so straightforward and Begu is generally at her best on a clay court. In a first-stroke battle, Konjuh should be too strong for Begu, Konjuh will rush Begu and should extract a lot of errors from the Romanian who will feel pressured to go for it in this match-up. Konjuh for the win.

Prediction: Ana Konjuh to defeat Irina-Camelia Begu in 2 sets
