Ana Konjuh vs Kirsten Flipkens, Miami R2 Preview

Miami Open, ???? R2 Match Preview
(29) ?? Ana Konjuh vs ?? Kirsten Flipkens

Ana Konjuh and Kirsten Flipkens will go head-to-head for the second time in 2017 when they meet at the second round stage of the Miami Open on Thursday. Konjuh won their only previous encounter in three sets at the ASB Classic in Auckland earlier this year. The young Croatian has shown glimpses of her best in 2017 but has really lacked consistency, Konjuh will be hoping to make a big impact in Miami as she has failed to go deep in a big tournament this year.

Ana Konjuh is arguably the greatest young talent on tour. Konjuh has already achieved so much at the age of 19, most notably her run to the quarter-finals at the U.S Open last year. Konjuh started the year with a run to the final in Auckland but has struggled with consistency since then. Konjuh made the quarter-finals in Dubai last month but arrives in Miami on the back of a poor first up loss to Peng Shuai at the BNP Paribas Open. Konjuh also struggled to make an impact at the Australian Open so she will be hoping she can make an impact in Miami.

Kirsten Flipkens advanced to the second round in Miami courtesy of a 3-6 6-3 7-5 win over Jennifer Brady. It was a gutsy win for Flipkens who trailed by a break in both the second and third sets. Flipkens may not be as fit as she once was but she is still a great competitor and is still able to come up with some nifty play which can throw her opponents off.

I suspect Konjuh will again be too strong for Flipkens on this occasion. Konjuh has all the firepower to deal with Flipkens, it’s all about consistency and being able to execute her game here. If Konjuh is having a bad day, Flipkens is solid enough to take advantage. I’m going to side with Konjuh here, but there might be some tough moments throughout the match.

Prediction: Ana Konjuh to defeat Kirsten Flipkens in 3 sets
