BNP Paribas Open, ??? Indian Wells R1 Preview
?? Victoria Azarenka vs ?? Heather Watson
I’m going to side with Azarenka, this is a favourable match-up for the Belarussian to make her competitive return. Azarenka holds a commanding 5-0 head-to-head record over Watson, this is a good match-up for Azarenka because Watson does not really have any big weapons to hurt the two-time former Indian Wells champion. The conditions in Indian wells should suit Azarenka in this match-up, it is Azarenka who is better suited to the slower hard courts. Watson’s best results have generally been on a quick surface.
Azarenka has a great record against consistent baseline players, just look at her record against Wozniacki, Kerber and Radwanska, coupled with her record over Watson and the Brit’s poor form, this looks like an Azarenka win. Watson’s form has been poor in recent times and she is not playing with the required level of confidence to get past a quality opponent such as Azarenka. The only problem for Azarenka is that she may potentially be rusty given she has not played a competitive match since Wimbledon last year.
