Fed Cup WG 2: Australia vs Ukraine, Rubber 2
?? Daria Gavrilova vs ?? Marta Kostyuk
There is a big gap in the rankings between Gavrilova (26) and Kostyuk (185). However, this match could be much closer than the large gap in ranking between the pair suggests.
The grass court surface in Canberra should actually favour Kostyuk in this match-up. Grass is undoubtedly Gavrilova’s worst surface whilst grass perfectly suits the flat, aggressive game of Kostyuk. On a slower surface Gavrilova’s defensive skills would be too much for Kostyuk to handle, however on grass, Kostyuk has the opportunity to hit through Gavrilova more easily.
Clearly Gavrilova has far more experience but it can be argued that there is greater pressure on Gavrilova here and that has been a problem for her in the past. Kostyuk is not expected to win this match and played with a freedom during the entire Aussie summer, if Kostyuk brings a relaxed attitude to this match and executes her game, she has a real chance to push Gavrilova.
Despite all this, I am going to side with Gavrilova but I think this will be a close match and Kostyuk has a good chance to win at least 1 set. Kostyuk still has a very raw game, at this level she is exposed for that. Gavrilova’s base level is much higher and that should see her eventually get through this match.
