Qatar Total Open, Doha Final Prediction
(4) ?? Garbine Muguruza vs (16) ?? Petra Kvitova
This promises to be a high quality, tightly contested final between a pair of two-time former Grand Slam champions. Muguruza and Kvitova both have great records in finals, both have a history of raising their game at this stage of a tournament, both love the big stage. The scene is set for an epic final in Doha.
Whilst both players have played well this week and both have a good record in finals, it is clearly Petra Kvitova who brings the better form into this match having won 12 matches in a row. The calibre of opponents Kvitova has beaten this week has been impressive, wins over Radwanska, Svitolina and Wozniacki. Conversely Muguruza was not tested until she beat Garcia in the quarterfinals and received a walkover into the final courtesy of Halep’s withdrawal.
I have to give the edge to Kvitova here. Petra is in awesome form and holds a 3-1 record over Muguruza. Muguruza can struggle against more powerful opponents on quicker surfaces such as the one in Doha. Form and the match-up favour Kvitova. Kvitova’s ability to get Muguruza on the defense, moving her from side to side makes this a very uncomfortable matchup for the Spaniard.
Kvitova has been so clutch in all the important moments this week, most notably in the second set tiebreak against Wozniacki yesterday, where Kvitova rallied from an early deficit with winner after winner under extreme pressure. Kvitova is very sharp right now, seemingly too sharp for Muguruza.
