Sunday final from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells will be battle between experience and youth as Angelique Kerber takes on Bianca Andreescu. Kerber, a 3-time Grand Slam champion and former world number 1. Andreescu, an 18-year-old playing in her first main draw at this level set to play in by far the biggest match of her career. Andreescu has consistently defied the odds over the last few weeks, can she do it again here or will Kerber be too strong?
I’m very confident Kerber will get the job done here and claim her first premier mandatory title. Firstly, experience is likely to be a huge factor in this final. Kerber is a proven champion, she has won 3 Grand Slam titles so she knows how to peak in finals after a few weeks of competition. Conversely, this is unprecedented territory for Andreescu, to say the least.
Secondly, I think this is the toughest match-up Andreescu will face this tournament and potentially the toughest of her career thus far. Kerber is the best counter-puncher in the women’s game. Andreescu struggled at times to deal with Svitolina’s counter-punching in the previous round, Kerber will be a similar test but a much tougher test given Kerber’s ability to hug the baseline and take control of points on a fairly regular basis, something Svitolina couldn’t do enough in her match against Andreescu.
Ultimately, I think Kerber will be too tough for Andreescu. Kerber is peaking heading into this final whilst Andreescu was seemingly struggling physically in her semi-final match, I’m not sure Andreescu has much left in the tank. Kerber is a class above.
