??? BNPPO19, Indian Wells – SF Prediction
?? (8) Angelique Kerber vs. ?? (23) Belinda Bencic
An intriguing semi-final match-up from the BNP Paribas Open on Friday sees a red-hot Belinda Bencic come up against the mighty Angelique Kerber. Bencic enters this match on an 11-match winning streak whilst Kerber enters this match fresh from a scintillating performance against Venus Williams in the previous round where she came through In straight sets. Expect a tough contest here between two baseline warriors.
I’m going to side with Angelique Kerber. Firstly, it is Kerber who has the edge in this match-up in recent times having won the last 3 matches between the pair, all in straight sets, including a 6-4 7-6 win just a few months ago at the Hopman Cup.
The problems for Bencic is that Kerber feeds off the type of flat and consistent game that Bencic possesses. Kerber does most things better than Bencic, Kerber moves better, is stronger physically, this is a critical factor in a match-up between two baseliners. Kerber has slightly more firepower but both can redirect pace well, Bencic is perhaps better at generating her own pace. These two play in a similar way, both are primarily counter-punchers, in this match-up Bencic needs to go for more because Kerber is stronger from the baseline and that can lead to trouble. I think Kerber will be too tough here, especially on this reasonably slow surface, a surface that favours Kerber in this match-up.
