Mutua Madrid Open, ? Final Prediction
?? (10) Petra Kvitova vs. ?? Kiki Bertens
Saturday’s final between Kvitova and Bertens in Madrid looms as an epic. Both are in outstanding form. Kvitova is on a 10-match winning streak whilst Bertens has won 11 of her last 12 matches. Kvitova and Bertens both have great records in finals, Kvitova has an incredible 23-7 win/loss record in finals whilst Bertens has a very respectable 5-1 win/loss record in finals.
The quick clay courts in Madrid have proven to be a favourable surface for Kvitova and Bertens. Whilst clay is considered Kvitova’s worst surface, the Madrid clay is different, Kvitova is a two-time former champion in Madrid, easily her most successful tournament on clay. Bertens is a clay court expert having recorded an outstanding 50-10 win/loss on clay over the last 3 seasons.
All signs are pointing to a really close match, there is little to separate these two. The difference I see is that Kvitova is far more experienced on the big stage and is clinical in these circumstances. Kvitova’s finals record speaks for itself but what makes her record more impressive than that of Bertens is that Kvitova is a Grand Slam champion and a former champion in Madrid, she is used to winning these big titles whilst Bertens will be competing in the biggest final of her career. Kvitova is mentally tougher and her best is better, expect Kvitova to win a close one.
