Australian Open, ?? Semi-Final Prediction
?? (1) Simona Halep vs ?? (21) Angelique Kerber
The second semi-final final of the day at Melbourne Park between Halep and Kerber promises to be an epic. Halep and Kerber are both in outstanding form heading into this match, both were extremely impressive in commanding quarter-final victories over quality opponents. Halep defeated Karolina Pliskova whilst Kerber defeated Madison Keys. There is very little to separate these two, arguably the two best players in the world right now. The head-to-head record between the pair is fittingly split at 4 wins apiece heading into this match.
This should be a long, close battle between two players with very similar playing styles. Halep and Kerber are the two best counter-punchers in the world, in this match-up both will look to be more aggressive than usual because free points from the other side of the net will be rare.
I’m going to side with Simona Halep. There really is so little to separate these two but I get the feeling the Romanian will find a way through this. Importantly I think Halep is not feeling any pressure right now having not expected to be contending for the title after some early round scares.
I think it will be Kerber who will try to be the more aggressive, this may cause Kerber problems as hitting through Halep will be very tough. I think it is Halep who is more dangerous from further behind the court and I think both players will be spending a fair amount of time in that position. I also think Halep’s serve will be slightly less attackable. The Kerber serve is particularly fragile, especially against the strong backhand of Halep.
