??? BNPPO19, Indian Wells – R4 Prediction
?? (6) Elina Svitolina vs. ?? (12) Ashleigh Barty
Elina Svitolina’s perfect record against Ash Barty goes on the line when the Ukrainian meets the in-form Aussie at the fourth round stage of the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday. This has been a problematic match-up for Barty, Svitolina has won all 4 of their previous matches, the last 3 victories for Svitolina have been in straight sets. Barty’s results have improved significantly in the last year and thus she is on the verge of entering the top 10 for the first time, does she finally have what it take to beat Svitolina? I don’t think so.
I expect Svitolina to continue her head-to-head dominance of Barty when they meet in Indian Wells. This is simply a bad match-up for Barty and the Indian Wells surface does not help her cause. Svitolina is a wall from the baseline, a wall that Barty struggles to penetrate. Barty’s strength is her ability to move up the court and attack her opponent as well as her versatility from the baseline.
Unfortunately for Barty, neither of her great strengths really hurt Svitolina. Barty doesn’t get to venture up the court as frequently as she would like against Svitolina and when she does venture forward she is not as successful in this match-up because Svitolina likes a target at the net. The slow hard court in Indian Wells favours Svitolina in this match-up, it makes Barty’s job even tougher. Svitolina has come through some close matches this week and is seemingly well placed heading into this match.
