Brisbane R2: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs Alize Cornet
A big opportunity to reach a premier level quarter-final presents itself to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Alize Cornet when the pair do battle in the second round of the Brisbane International on Tuesday. Both Anastasia and Alize made great starts to their 2016 campaigns on Sunday with straight set victories over high quality opponents and will be full of confidence heading into this match.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was the biggest winner of day 1 of the Brisbane International, recording an emphatic 6-2 6-1 victory over the fifth seeded Timea Bacsinszky. The Russian is capable of playing such damaging tennis, she needs to work on her consistency in 2016, starting by backing up her stunning first round performance in Brisbane. Pavlyuchenkova has a great record in Brisbane, the former finalist looks set for another strong run at the event.
Alize Cornet started her season with a very solid performance, defeating compatriot Kristina Mladenovic 6-3 6-4. Alize had such a disappointing year in 2015, it would have been a big relief for the Frenchwoman to start 2016 on such a positive note, hopefully it was a sign of things to come.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has won all 3 previous encounters against Alize. The Russian has beaten Alize on all 3 surfaces, however the pair haven’t played each other since 2011 when Pavlyuchenkova won a three set encounter in a Fed Cup tie.
This seems like a good match-up for Pavlyuchenkova, the Russian does most things better than Alize and should be too strong for the Frenchwoman from the baseline. I suspect Pavlyuchenkova will eventually hit her way past Alize yet again.
