Aegon International, ?? Eastbourne R3 Preview
(14) ?? Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs (wc) ?? Heather Watson

An intriguing third round clash at the Aegon International in Eastbourne sees the 14th seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova take on Heather Watson and the British crowd. Watson has been in inspired form in front of her home crowd this week, the Brit has already claimed upset wins over Lesia Tsurenko and Dominika Cibulkova and will hoping to make Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova her third victim when they go head-to-head on Wednesday.

After receiving a bye into the second round, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova overcome an early test to get past Elise Mertens and advance to the third round. The Russian defeated Mertens 3-6 6-4 6-1. Grass has historically been Pavlyuchenkova’s least successful surface but that changed last year at Wimbledon when Pavlyuchenkova reached the quarter-finals, showing that she can be dangerous on this surface.

Heather Watson arrived in Eastbourne fresh off two disappointing first round exits on grass. The Brit has seemingly turned her form around this week, starting with a 6-3 4-6 6-4 win over Lesia Tsurenko before beating the 4th seeded Dominika Cibulkova 7-5 6-4. Grass has historically been Watson’s best surface, she will fancy her chances of another upset when she takes on Pavlyuchenkova in the third round.

This will be the first career meeting between Pavlyuchenkova and Watson. This should be a very close match, there is not too much to separate these two on this particular surface. Previous results suggest the surface will favour Watson but Pavlyuchenkova has the powerful game to hurt Watson, Pavlyuchenkova does most things better than Watson, the only area Watson is better is in her movement. If Pavlyuchenkova serves well and is smart coming forward, she should eventually get the better of the Brit.

Prediction: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to defeat Heather Watson in 3 sets
