Anastasija Sevastova vs Eugenie Bouchard, Roland Garros R2 Preview

Roland Garros, ??? R2 Preview + Prediction
(17) ?? Anastasija Sevastova vs ?? Eugenie Bouchard

2014 Roland Garros semi-finalist Eugenie Bouchard continues her 2017 Paris campaign on Thursday when she takes on the 17th seeded Anastasija Sevastova in the second round at Roland Garros. Bouchard made a slow start to her opening round match but eventually rallied to come from a set down to defeat Risa Ozaki. The Canadian can’t afford a similar slow start in her second round clash with Sevastova, the Latvian has been in great form in the lead-up to Paris and is probably playing the best tennis of her career at the moment.

Eugenie Bouchard made an uncomfortable start to her 2017 Roland Garros campaign. Bouchard was seemingly struggling with injury in her opening match with Risa Ozaki but as the match wore on the Canadian became more comfortable with her movement and was able to improve her level enough to come through with a 2-6 6-3 6-2 win. Bouchard remains an unknown at the moment, she showed a few weeks ago in Madrid that her best tennis is still very good as reached the quarter-finals with some big wins. If Bouchard can bring that level to Paris she can cause some damage, starting with an upset win over Sevastova.

Anastasija Sevastova brought great form to Paris, Sevastova made the quarter-finals in Stuttgart and the semi-finals in Madrid, beating the likes of Johanna Konta, Karolina Pliskova and Kiki Bertens in the process. Sevastova made a strong start to her Roland Garros campaign, beating Annika Beck 6-2 6-4 to reach the second round in Paris for the second time. Sevastova will be attempting to reach the third round in Paris for the very first time when she comes up against Bouchard on Thursday.

The head-to-head record between Sevastova and Bouchard is split at 1 win apiece. Both of their prior meetings took place in 2016, Bouchard won the first in Doha which went all the way to a deciding set tiebreak. More recently Sevastova won in straight sets on grass in Mallorca.

I think Bouchard is capable of causing the upset here. Sevastova has obviously been more consistent in recent times but that counts for little here. Bouchard has more firepower at her disposal and that is important on a clay court. Bouchard also has a better record at bigger events, Sevastova has generally not performed well at the Grand Slam level and will feel pressure to perform well in Paris given her results over the last few months. Bouchard on the other hand has nothing to lose and can play with freedom, I suspect this will result in a Bouchard win as she hits her way through the Latvian.

Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard to defeat (17) Anastasija Sevastova in 3 sets
