Anastasija Sevastova vs Sloane Stephens, U.S Open QF Preview

US Open, ????? QF Preview + Prediction:
(16) ?? Anastasija Sevastova vs ?? Sloane Stephens

A huge opportunity presents itself for Anastasija Sevastova and Sloane Stephens on Tuesday when they do battle for a place at the semi-final stage at Flushing Meadows. Both would be unexpected semi-finalists. This will be the first ever meeting between Sevastova and Stephens, both head into this match in great form having knocked out top players on route to this stage of the event. Sevastova is fresh off eliminating Maria Sharapova in what was one of the biggest wins of her career, whilst Sloane Stephens has already beaten four quality opponents in New York. It will be interesting to see who steps up and takes this big opportunity, nerves will undoubtedly be a big factor.

Anastasija Sevastova achieved her biggest result at a Grand Slam at the U.S Open last year where she reached the quarter-final stage. 12 months later, the Latvian is back into the quarter-finals in New York. Sevastova moved through the first week of the tournament quite comfortably, claiming straight set wins over Carina Witthoeft, Kateryna Kozlova and Donna Vekic. The 16th seed’s biggest win came at the fourth round stage as she defeated Maria Sharapova 5-7 6-4 6-2. It was an impressive victory for Sevastova who stuck in the match and turned it into a physical battle. Sevastova ultimately outlasted a tiring Sharapova.

Sloane Stephens is into the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time since Wimbledon 2013. Stephens has done very well to reach the quarter-final stage given how difficult her draw has been. Stephens started the event with a straight set win over Roberta Vinci before eliminating the 11th seeded Dominika Cibulkova in a tough three set match. The American then went on to defeat an in-form Ashleigh Barty in straight sets before confirming her spot in the final 8 with a topsy-turvy 6-3 3-6 6-1 win over Julia Goerges. Stephens has been one of the form players throughout the U.S Open series and now seemingly has a legitimate chance to go all the way in New York.

In the first career meeting between the pair, I’d give the edge to Sloane Stephens. Sevastova is a tricky opponent and clearly likes to play on the big courts in New York. However, I think this is a good match-up for Stephens as her great movement and anticipation will help her handle the awkward shots thrown at her by the Latvian. Sloane has shown her ability to beat all different types of opponents. Stephens has more weapons from the baseline and a heavier serve. The crowd will also be on Sloane’s side and Sevastova has a record of flopping at the later stages of a big tournament. This match is Sloane’s to lose.

  1. This match can go either way. It depends on Sevastova. If she can handle the mental pressure to play like her previous match, she can beat Sloane.

  2. Good job calling Sevastova over Sharapova. I’m very surprised at the result, and very disappointed in Sharapova’s performance. I’m always fading Sevastova, because she always loses eventually, and she is overdue. She just isn’t very consistent or reliable. Her mentally is weak too, she starts complaining and whining in the middle of matches that aren’t going her way to her coach(box). It’s ok to get frustrated and even break a racquet, but she doesn’t do that, she just whines and then folds. Can you tell I’m not a fan of hers….lol. I like winners, cause I bet em, and I’m with Sloane here….

    • Thanks. Just had a feeling that it would be a bad match-up for Maria and it was. Don’t see it being the same with Stephens. I also don’t rate Sevastova very highly.

  3. Sloane on home turf and with good form I’m easily backing. Sevastova wasn’t playing amazing against, sharapova. Sharapova played bad. Over 50 ue’s and just hitting the ball like Ostapenko without trying to build points. She was a mess, and I feel sloane will get away from sevastova easily

    • Yes, good point. Sharapova was a mess against Sevastova. Stephens is a totally different task, the type of player Sevastova usually struggles against

  4. Sloane Stephens will defeat A. Sevastova am not sure of the sets but i picked Sloane to defeat Julia Goerges directly(money line) and on a 2nd slip i picked S. Stephens to win in 2 sets, she won in 3 sets that slip failed.
    S. Stephens should win this match and i also think this match might go over 21.5 games.

I posted a full WTA prediction in the article Coco Vandeweghe vs Fucie Safarova, i picked Coco to win cos she is balling.
I want Coco to go far but she is playing my baby(Karolina Pliskova) next and i know Karolina will win the title if she stays focused & doesn’t get discouraged.

I picked D. Kasatkina to win and she lost, on a different site(would it be appropriate for me to post the site) i cautioned readers to be careful of this pick, i should have done the same here because i wasn’t sure of this pick and i gave some reasons why in the previous page for e.g Kaia Kanepi hasn’t lost a match on hard court this year and she is really playing, she has 7 wins 0 loses on hard court and all those 7 wins came in the US OPEN because she played some qualification matches.

Madison Keys in my opinion and analysis is the better player and will defeat her but K. Kanepi is leading in the (H2H 1-0) it was on a clay court.

I picked M. Keys to defeat Elina Svitolina at 2.02 odd, i also picked her(M. Keys) to win and over 21.5 games at 3.70 odd.
Wtaaddictcom, plzzz if it’s not appropriate 4 me to post this odds let me know, yesterday was my 1st time here so…
Madison Keys will defeat K. Kanepi but it won’t be easy, maybe in 2 tight sets or in 3 sets, i like M. Keys to win, over games, the line(over/under games) is not out and some sites offer multiple totals to choose 4rm the higher games the higher the odd vice versa or pick M. Keys to win and over games if the line is low i don’t want to underestimate Kaia Kanepi and go with the under games but the safest pick is M. Keys to win directly she better not lose.

    • I would be shocked if Stephens lost. Sevastova does not belong in the semifinals of a Grand Slam…

Congratulations on your Keys prediction… I personally got burnt by Svitolina.

Keys should beat Kanepi but who knows what level Keys will produce, anything is possible with her..

    • Sloane got the job done in the end.. didn’t do things the easy way. She almost made the same mistake as Sharapova

  5. Yes she did, S. Stephens almost lost in the 3rd set but she broke back.

I picked Sloane stephens to win just as Wtaaddict did and others as well.
I also picked the over 21.5 games and S. Stephens to win & over games.

Congrats to her and to us as well.

My favourite sport is soccer & basketball i play as well(soccer), i love tennis and i am passionate about it especially ATP but this site will make me love WTA more than ATP and that’s not a bad thing.

Honestly i haven’t found a site that is as good as yours when it comes to WTA, we disagree on some picks but your site rocks.

      • You are welcome!
You and your site deserves all the praise.
Should i address you as Wtaaddictcom or is there a particular name you would like me to call you?

Petra vs Venus just started a few minutes ago, you picked Venus williams, i picked Petra Kvitova, i hope we both get it right lol!
I am wishing us both good luck.

        Take care ok.

        • I appreciate those words, good encouragement. WTAAddict is fine ?

Haha, don’t think that’s going to happen.. it is going to be close. That’s for sure.

  6. I found your site yesterday and I told some of my friends who love tennis on other sites(that cover mainly ATP) about WTAADDICTCOM.

I know that they will appreciate and love your site when the come cos it’s informative on WTA and AWESOME.

    • Great!! Tell them to get involved. It’s good to have a lot of viewers but I appreciate comments and discussions more ?

  7. I wish more respect for Sevastova. She is Top 20 now for a reason and came just short today. And her game can be very nice to watch. Would not surprise me if she get a big moment in her career to never forget.

    • People have their different opinions. I don’t rate Sevastova highly.. she did better than i thought today. I just don’t think she is ever capable of actually winning a big tournament, she will always stumble at the end

      • wtaaddict, even though Sevastova is more talented than Sloane and 90% of the WTA players she suffers from the “Wozniaki & Halep Syndrome” when she plays in the QF /SF/Finals or any big match!lol

In the 3rd set, twice sevastova had the lead. She just had to maintain her serve and she did not and lost as she became nervous and forgot her game plan (slice, dice and drop etc.) which won her the 2nd set!

Congrats wtaaddict for picking Slaone to win correctly. But I nearly peed my pants as sloane played poorly for most part of the 3rd set and was behind (and thought that she will lose). The home crowd picked her up when sloane was down twice and nearly done in the 3rd set!

        • Yes, the home crowd was a big factor in the final set and I too got a bit worried there as Sevastova took the lead in the final set. You are right, Sevastova is almost always going to fall apart when it matters most in big matches
