Anett Kontaveit vs Carina Witthoeft, Gstaad QF Preview

Ladies Championship, Gstaad, ???️ Quarter-final Preview
(3) ?? Anett Kontaveit vs (6) ?? Carina Witthoeft

Anett Kontaveit and Carina Witthoeft will go head-to-head in an interesting quarter-final clash in Gstaad between two of the tours exciting young prospects. Kontaveit and Witthoeft have both shown glimpses of what they are capable of throughout 2017, particularly Kontaveit who has been in superb form over the last couple of months. The Estonian has won both of the previous matches between the pair and her recent form suggests she should be able to maintain her perfect record over the German on Friday in Gstaad.

Anett Kontaveit is in the best form of her career. Kontaveit has won 15 of her last 18 matches, a run that has seen the 21-year-old reach the quarter-finals in Rome and win her first WTA title in s-Hertogenbosch. Kontaveit has progressed to the quarter-final stage in Gstaad courtesy of a 6-1 6-3 win over Martina Trevisan and a 6-4 4-6 6-4 triumph against Anna Kalinskaya. Clearly, Kontaveit is playing with a great deal of confidence at the moment.

Carina Witthoeft has taken a similar route to the quarter-finals in Gstaad. The German started with a reasonably comfortable 6-3 7-6 win over Silvia Soler-Espinosa before coming from a set down to beat Rebecca Sramkova 2-6 6-2 6-2. Whilst Witthoeft has had some decent victories on clay in 2017, if she were to beat Kontaveit on Friday it would be her biggest win on the surface this year given the Estonian’s great form in recent months.

These two have quite similar game styles, both possess great power from the ground and have decent serves. The difference is that Kontaveit is generally much more consistent and is more capable of committing to building points rather than pulling the trigger too early. The pair met just recently on grass in s-Hertogenbosch where Kontaveit won 6-3 6-1. I expect their quarter-final in Gstaad will be much closer, but ultimately it should be Kontaveit who prevails given her sky-high confidence level and greater consistency throughout matches.

Prediction: Anett Kontaveit to defeat Carina Witthoeft in 3 sets
