Stanford R2: (5) Angelique Kerber vs Ana Konjuh
2014 runner-up Angelique Kerber will come up against Ana Konjuh in the second round at the Bank of the West Classic. Angie will be looking to go one step further this year, her first round form suggests that she is going to be the one to beat this week in Stanford.
Angie made an impressive start to her 2015 Bank of the West Classic campaign on Tuesday evening, the German number 1 needed just over an hour to breeze past Daria Gavrilova 6-1 6-3. Kerber was forced to work hard for her first two victories over Gavrilova earlier this year in Australia, however this victory was far more straightforward. Angie was too solid from the baseline and seems to have carried over her positive grass court season form into the North American swing.
Ana Konjuh is really starting to rise up the rankings. Konjuh won her first ever WTA Title just a couple of months ago in Birmingham before reaching the third round at Wimbledon. Konjuh advanced to the second round in Stanford with a relatively comfortable 6-3 6-4 victory over Saisai Zheng.
This will be the first meeting between Kerber and Konjuh, this promises to be a fascinating encounter, it will be interesting to see if Konjuh can really challenge an in form Kerber. Konjuh should be competitive in patches, but it’s highly unlikely she will be able to maintain a high enough level to cause Angie too many problems.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Ana Konjuh in 2 sets
