(10) Angelique Kerber vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
Angelique Kerber is one of the dark horses at SW19 in 2015, the German made an impressive start to her campaign on Monday and will bring a heap of momentum into her second round clash with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
2012 semifinalist: Angelique Kerber made a perfect to her 2015 Wimbledon campaign, thumping Carina Witthoeft 6-0 6-0 in just 45 minutes.
Kerber was at her counterpunching best, hugging the baseline, blasting winner after winner past her compatriot. Angie finished the match with 21 winners and just 5 unforced errors in an extremely clean performance.
Kerber looks to be full of confidence at the moment after claiming her third title of the year a couple of weeks ago in Birmingham. The German is certainly one to look out for over the next fortnight, the biggest threat to the obvious contenders.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova advanced to the second round with a 6-7 7-6 6-2 victory over Mona Barthel. The Russian came ever so close to a third consecutive first round exit at Wimbledon, saving a match point on the Barthel serve in the second set
Wimbledon has been the Russians least successful Grand Slam, she is much more comfortable on slower courts. Pavlyuchenkova has never reached the second week at Wimbledon, she will need to cause a huge upset over Kerber to keep her 2015 campaign alive.
There is reason for Pavlyuchenkova to be optimistic heading into this match. The head to head record between Anastasia and Angie is locked at 3 wins apiece. Kerber has won 3 of the last four matches between the two, including a 6-1 6-0 rout on clay in the fed cup earlier this year. This will be the first encounter between the two on grass.
It’s impossible to pick against Angie here. The German is in magnificent form and is playing with a high level of confidence at the moment. Angie is far more comfortable on the grass and will back herself from the baseline against Pavlyuchenkova. Everything points to a win for the German.
Prediction: Angie Kerber to defeat Pavlyuchenkova in 2 sets
