Brisbane R1: (4) Angelique Kerber vs Camila Giorgi
Fourth seeded Angelique Kerber faces a potentially dangerous opening round opponent on Monday at the Brisbane International when she comes up against Italian Camila Giorgi.
Angelique Kerber is another player who has a real opportunity to climb up the rankings during the Australian summer. The German has very few points to defend over the next couple of weeks, Angie was ousted in the second round in Brisbane last year by Elina Svitolina and suffered a shock first round exit at the Australian Open with a loss to Irina-Camelia Begu. A return to the top 5 is within reach, Angie will be very determined to play much better tennis in Australian this year.
There is no doubt that Camila Giorgi’s best is very good, however she has very rarely been able to sustain consistently good tennis throughout tournaments or even matches. 2016 is a big year for the Italian, Giorgi is now an experienced player and given the obvious talent that she possesses she should be pushing towards the top 20 in the rankings.
The only previous meeting between the pair took place in Wuhan last year, Angie won that match quite comfortably 6-2 6-4. Giorgi has the ability to trouble anyone on her day, she seemingly has the weapons to trouble Kerber especially with her return of serve. However Angie is infinitely more consistent and will probably be too solid for the Italian.
