Wuhan R3: (6) Angelique Kerber vs Camila Giorgi
Angelique Kerber and Camila Giorgi will go head-to-head for the first time ever on Wednesday when they meet in the third round at the Wuhan Open. Angelique Kerber continues to play great tennis and is very close to securing her spot at the WTA Finals in Singapore. The German will be wary of her third round opponent, Camila Giorgi is certainly capable of causing an upset.
Angelique Kerber arrived in Wuhan in reasonable form after reaching the quarter-finals in Tokyo last week where she succumbed in an epic three set match to Caroline Wozniacki. Angie received a bye into the second round in Wuhan where she recorded an impressive 6-4 2-6 6-2 victory over Jelena Jankovic. The first two sets were quite scrappy but Angelique really raised her game in the final set to storm into the third round. Kerber is currently ranked 7th in the race to Singapore standings and can almost guarantee her spot at the event with a strong performance in Wuhan.
Camila Giorgi will enter this match feeling like she has nothing to lose, the Italian has been quite lucky in her progression to the third round. Giorgi came extremely close to a first round exit, coming back from a set and a break down and saving a match point to defeat Tsvetana Pironkova 2-6 6-2 7-5. Giorgi took the first set 6-2 against Belinda Bencic in their second round clash before the Swiss rising star retired injured.
This should be a fun match, it will be interesting to see if Giorgi can trouble the German in their first career encounter. Giorgi certainly has the game to trouble Kerber, if the Italian serves well and gets on top of the German’s vulnerable serve then she has a chance. However I doubt Giorgi can sustain a high enough level for long enough to pull off the upset over a determined Kerber.
