Angelique Kerber vs Ekaterina Makarova, Cincinnati R2 Preview

Western & Southern Open, ??? Cincinnati R2 Preview + Prediction
(3) ?? Angelique Kerber vs ?? Ekaterina Makarova

Angelique Kerber will be out for revenge when she comes up against Ekaterina Makarova in the second round of the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday. Kerber was defeated by Makarova in straight sets in the opening round of Roland Garros earlier this year. These two have a long history, this will be the 13th meeting between the pair, Kerber holds a 7-5 record over Makarova but it the Russian who heads into this clash with form on her side.

Makarova heads into this match with form on her side having won 8 of her last 9 matches. Makarova claimed her first title of the year in Washington D.C, in what was the perfect beginning to her U.S Open series. Makarova also claimed a few good wins in Toronto last week, including a three set win over Johanna Konta. Kerber’s U.S Open series campaign hasn’t gotten off to such a good start. Kerber was beaten in the third round in Toronto last week, a meek straight set loss to Sloane Stephens.

Despite Makarova’s superior form, I think Kerber will emerge victorious here. The conditions in Cincinnati suit both players, the fast conditions are likely to favour Kerber in this match-up. Kerber will be eager to perform well here after last week performance and with the U.S open just around the corner it is important that Kerber has a good week. Kerber usually does well in this match-up because of her ability to absorb Makarova’s shots and outlast her in rallies.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Ekaterina Makarova in 2 sets

  1. Man, I don’t know…..about this. Kerber flat out has looked weak in her ground strokes, there is no pop in her racket right now. She was completely over powered by Sloan Stephens, and I see a highly motivated and in form Makarova winning this.

  2. That match was sick. I was counting my money when she went up 5-2, just to be cursing at the screen watching Makarova fold like a cheap lawn chair. I still don’t know how she managed to win that. Oh well, lucky or not, it was a…..Good Call! Also, I’m now not a fan of Makarova as she was whining and crying, all the way to the win….bad sportsmanship. You could tell Angie didn’t appreciate it….see that hand shake…lol
