Angelique Kerber vs Garbine Muguruza, Wimbledon R4 Preview

Wimbledon ????? R4 Match Preview:
(1) ?? Angelique Kerber vs (14) ?? Garbine Muguruza

Two Grand Slam champions will collide in a blockbuster fourth round clash at SW19 on Monday as world number 1 Angelique Kerber comes up against Garbine Muguruza. Both Kerber and Muguruza are former finalists at Wimbledon, both are extremely determined to go one step better in 2017. Muguruza has had the clear edge in this match-up in recent times, the Spaniard has won the last four matches between the pair, all four of those wins came in 2015. Kerber is a different player now, the world number 1 will be keen to display that and keep her hopes of claiming a third Grand Slam title alive.

Angelique Kerber is looking as focused and determined as she has been all year. Kerber started her 2017 Wimbledon campaign with a couple of tight straight set wins over Irina Falconi and Kirsten Flipkens. Kerber secured her spot in the second week with a gutsy 4-6 7-6 6-4 win over Shelby Rogers, the world number 1 came from a set and a break down in that match, displaying the type of spirit under pressure that saw her excel in 2016. If Kerber can replicate the intensity she showed in her third round battle then she will be a genuine contender to win the title over the next week.

Garbine Muguruza has sailed through to the second week in London without much fuss. Muguruza has not dropped a set in her first three matches, easily accounting for Ekaterina Alexandrova, Yanina Wickmayer and finally Sorana Cirstea. The 2015 finalist will receive her first major test when she comes up against Kerber on Monday.

Muguruza holds a 4-3 head-to-head record over Kerber and has won the last four matches between the pair. Muguruza’s victories all came in 2015, across three different surfaces, including an epic 7-6 1-6 6-2 win at Wimbledon.

I’m going to side with Kerber on this occasion. Kerber played some superb tennis to come through a tough third round battle against Shelby Rogers. Kerber displayed all the qualities that saw become a 2-time Grand Slam champion in 2016 and history has shown that Kerber usually responds well after coming through a tough match. Muguruza is yet to be challenged this tournament and despite her run to the final in 2015, grass is still the Spaniard’s least preferred surface whilst it is the German’s preferred surface.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Garbine Muguruza in 3 sets

  1. Sorry but Kerber will Kerber. Mugs will take down the fake number one player here. Mugs playing at a high level and Kerber was already gifted a match. Mugs won’t GIVE her this one like other players have

    • Anyone who watched the match would know Kerber could have easily won and actually should have won, she was up a break twice in the third and should have finished it in straight sets… so there was nothing at all wrong with that pick.
