Angelique Kerber vs Irina Falconi, Wimbledon R1 Preview

Wimbledon ???? Day 2, R1 Match Preview:
(1) ?? Angelique Kerber vs (Q) ?? Irina Falconi

Top seeded Angelique Kerber will begin her 2017 Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday where she takes on American qualifier Irina Falconi. Kerber easily won the only previous match between the pair and will be a strong favourite heading into this match. Kerber has hardly been a dominant world number 1, her title as the top player in the world will come under great threat over the next week as the German is defending finalist points from 2016, if Kerber can rediscover her 2016 form there is no reason why she can’t add to her Grand Slam collection in two weeks’ time.

Wimbledon has generally been Kerber’s most successful Grand Slam. Kerber has reached at least the quarter-final stage at SW19 on 3 occasions. 2016 was Kerber’s best result in London as she made it all the way to the final before losing to Serena Williams in a high quality final. Kerber had a horrible clay court season but showed glimpses of improvement in the lead-up to Wimbledon. Kerber was able to win a couple of matches in Eastbourne on grass before succumbing to Jo Konta at the quarter-final stage. Kerber has been training well on grass and has always been comfortable with her movement on this surface, it will be interesting to see how far the German can go this year.

Irina Falconi will be a little more acclimatised to the conditions at SW19 having come through the qualifying draw, Falconi won all three of her matches in the qualifying draw in straight sets. Nevertheless, that is unlikely to matter here. Kerber is clearly the far better player and will enjoy this match-up because she will have ample opportunity to dictate whilst Falconi lacks any real weapons to hurt the German’s rock-solid defence. This should be a routine, confidence boosting win for Kerber to start the tournament.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Irina Falconi in 2 sets
