Wuhan R2: (6) Angelique Kerber vs Jelena Jankovic
Angelique Kerber and Jelena Jankovic will kick-start proceedings on day 3 at the Wuhan Open. This promises to be an entertaining battle, Angelique Kerber must keep winning if she wants to qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore. The German is unlikely to have things all go her way, Jelena Jankovic is currently in good form after claiming her second title of the year last week in Guangzhou.
Angelique Kerber is currently ranked 7th in the Road to Singapore standings, a solid week in Wuhan will see the German move one step closer to another appearance at the WTA Finals. Kerber kick-started her Asian campaign last week, reaching the quarter-finals in Tokyo. The German picked up victories over Daria Gavrilova and Madison Brengle before succumbing to Caroline Wozniacki in an epic three set encounter. The quick conditions in Wuhan should really suit Angie, she is certainly a dark horse this week.
Jelena Jankovic loves playing in China. The Serb has won both of her titles in 2015 in China, her most recent title coming last week in Guangzhou. Jankovic continued her winning ways on Monday, claiming a 6-2 2-6 6-3 victory over Heather Watson. It was a bizarre match, the momentum swung wildly throughout the match but Jankovic eventually steadied to close it out.
Angelique Kerber holds a 3-1 head-to-head record over the Serb. The last two meetings between the pair have ended in a straight set victory for Angie, including a 6-4 6-2 victory in Eastbourne earlier this year in their most recent encounter. This is a tough match-up for Jankovic, Angie is able to negate her greatest weapon, and can hurt the Serb with her forehand down the line. I expect Kerber to come through this match, Jankovic is likely to be a little fatigued after all the tennis she has played in the last week and a bit.
