Angelique Kerber vs Katerina Siniakova, Madrid R2 Preview

?? Mutua Madrid Open, R2 Match Preview
(1) ?? Angelique Kerber vs ?? Katerina Siniakova

Angelique Kerber started her Mutua Madrid Open campaign with a solid straight set win over Timea Babos, the 6-4 6-2 win was Kerber’s first victory in Madrid in 2013 and meant that she will again be world number 1 when the new rankings come out next week. Kerber will be back In action on Monday when she takes on Katerina Siniakova in the second round, a potentially dangerous match for Kerber, especially on a clay court (Kerber’s worst surface).

Katerina Siniakova has played some good tennis in 2017, most notably in the first week on the year where she won her first WTA title in Shenzhen. The Czech has been a bit inconsistent since then but she is certainly a player on the rise and has some big groundstrokes, making her a dangerous opponent on her day. Siniakova stormed through her opening match in Madrid, claiming a crushing 6-1 6-0 win over Pauline Parmentier.

Angelique Kerber has won both of the previous matches between the pair, including a 6-4 6-4 win in their most recent match in Beijing last year. Monday’s clash will be their first meeting on a clay court. This is probably the ideal surface for Siniakova to challenge Kerber, however, I still believe Kerber will be too solid for Siniakova. Kerber played well in her opening match and seems to be in a good space, Siniakova will provide a challenge but her inconsistency in matches means she will not be good enough on this occasion.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Katerina Siniakova in 2 sets
