Angelique Kerber vs Kristyna Pliskova, Australian Open R3 Preview

Australian Open, ?? Third Round Match preview
(1) ?? Angelique Kerber vs ?? Kristyna Pliskova

Angelique Kerber has been pushed to three sets in the opening two matches of her title defense at Melbourne Park. The world number 1 was seemingly heading for a straight set win in both matches but was forced into a decider by Lesia Tsurenko and Carina Witthoeft. Kerber will be aiming for a more commanding victory when she comes up against Kristyna Pliskova at the third round stage on Friday. Kristyna Pliskova will not be a pushover, the Czech is finally starting to live up to her potential and is always a dangerous opponent because of the big weapons she possesses.

Angelique Kerber has been unable to find the kind of form that saw her reach her first Grand Slam triumph at the Australian Open 12 months ago, nevertheless, no harm has been done as the German has been able to navigate her way through a couple of tough matches to reach the third round stage at Melbourne Park. Kerber started the week with a 6-2 5-7 6-2 win over Lesia Tsurenko before beating Carina Witthoeft 6-2 6-7 6-2. Both matches followed a very similar path, with Kerber seemingly on track for a straight set win before stumbling at the end of the second set and then powering away in the deciding set.

Kristyna Pliskova is into the third round of a Grand Slam for just the second time in her young career. Pliskova has long lived in the shadow of her twin sister Karolina Pliskova but is starting to make a name for herself. Pliskova came through tricky opening round match against Viktorija Golubic 6-3 2-6 6-4 before taking out the 27th seeded Irina-Camelia Begu courtesy of a 6-4 7-6.

This will be the first career meeting between Kerber and Pliskova. Clearly, Kerber is a far, far more accomplished player and probably has the weapons that counter Pliskova’s strengths. Kristyna has one of the biggest serves on tour and has decent groundstrokes. Kerber will win a large majority of extended rallies and therefore should win this quite easily. Kerber has a good return of serve, if she can get a good percentage of serves back into the court she will have no troubles in this match.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Kristyna Pliskova in 2 sets

  1. Angelique Kerber has already dropped two sets in the first two rounds of her matches. That shows she’s really under pressure. I predict that her third round match against Kristyna Pliskova will go the distance to a three-setter, considering that this will be a match between two extremely strong lefties with their forehands being their best weapon. However, like Chrissie Ever said, Kerber doesn’t have the big serve to get herself out of trouble, like Serena does.

In the first two rounds, Kerber averaged three aces, five double faults, 26 winners, and 33 errors. Meanwhile, Kristyna Pliskova has averaged six aces, two double faults, 30 winners, and 40 errors. Both players have a negative difference between their winners and errors. But, Kristyna Pliskova has a big serve – that’s why she was able to serve 31 aces in her match against Monica Puig at last year’s Australian Open. We will probably see a lot of breaks of serve in this match. But, Kristyna Pliskova’s twin sister, Karolina, has played and beaten Kerber before. So, Karolina will be able to give some tips to Kristyna, just like Serena and Venus. This match could go either way. But, it’s definitely a three-setter. If I have to pick a winner, I’m going for Kristyna Pliskova to win in three sets.

    • I would be shocked if Pliskova won, i’d actually be pretty shocked if she only won a set. Kristyna is not at the level to beat someone of Kerber’s quality. Not going to happen.
