Angelique Kerber vs Lesia Tsurenko, Australian Open R1 Preview

Australian Open, ?? First Round Match preview
(1) ?? Angelique Kerber vs ?? Lesia Tsurenko

Angelique Kerber begins her title defense at the Australian Open with a first round clash against Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko on day 1 in Melbourne. There will be a whole new type of pressure on Kerber at Melbourne Park over the next fortnight as she looks to defend a Grand Slam title for the first time in her career. The German made an unconvincing start to the Australian summer in Brisbane and Sydney, it will be very interesting to see how the world number 1 handles herself at Melbourne Park over the next couple of weeks, it will be a totally new experience for Angie.

The tennis world will be watching to see how Kerber handles herself in Melbourne, to see if she is able to maintain her spot at the top of the women’s game. Kerber’s start to the season was not flash. The German has just one win to her name in 2017 heading into the first Grand Slam of the year. Kerber made the quarter-finals in Brisbane in the first week of the year, defeating Ash Barty in three sets before succumbing to Elina Svitolina in a tight three set tussle. Kerber then competed in Sydney where she produced a meek performance in her opening match, losing to Daria Kasatkina in straight sets in a very disappointing fashion. Kerber will need to dramatically raise her level in Melbourne if she to go on another deep run.

Lesia Tsurenko has made a decent start to the season, reaching the semi-final stage at the Hobart International in her first week of the season. Tsurenko claimed wins over Silvia Soler-Espinosa, Johanna Larsson and Shelby Rogers before withdrawing from her semi-final clash against Monica Niculescu with a viral illness. Interestingly, Tsurenko pulled out her Hobart semi-final soon after her first round clash at the Australian Open with Angelique Kerber was announced.

The only previous encounter between Kerber and Tsurenko took place in Sydney in 2015, the German claimed a 1-6 6-4 6-3 victory. The Ukrainian certainly has the game to push the German top seed into a close match. Tsurenko is very solid from the baseline and likes to use her backhand to attack. It is always a positive to have a strong backhand to put pressure on a left-handed server, this could be an issue for Kerber if her serve gets predictable and tight. I can see this match getting pushed to a third set but the German’s superior toughness and experience in close matches should see her through this one.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Lesia Tsurenko in 3 sets

  1. I agree with this prediction of the match going to three sets. Angelique Kerber HAS NOT won a single title since she replaced Serena Williams as the new world #1. Lesia Tsurenko is a dangerous player, having scored five top 10 wins in her career. Kerber is gonna have to play a hell lot better if she wants to win this title again! I find it weird that the preview of Serena vs. Bencic isn’t up yet, though

    • Thanks for the comment, Yes, I agree that Kerber is going to need to play a lot better if she wants to get through to the second week and even if she wants to get through this match… Tsurenko at her best is a good match for Kerber, would be interesting as Kerber could get very nervous if it is a close one.
The previews i have added are all for day 1 matches. Top half is Monday. Bottom half is Tuesday.
match previews for Tuesday (including Serena vs Bencic) will be posted tomorrow.

  2. Let’s just say that Kerber won’t be happy if she loses a set in the first round against Tsurenko. But, she also ain’t gonna be smiling either if she has to face another lefty, Kristyna Pliskova, in the third round.
