Toronto R1: (13) Angelique Kerber vs Misaki Doi
Angelique Kerber arrives in Toronto full of confidence after capturing her fourth premier level title of the year last week at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford. The German now leads the Emirates U.S Open series bonus challenge. It’s a quick turnaround for Kerber, she comes up against Misaki Doi on Tuesday in her opening round match in Toronto.
Kerber couldn’t have asked for a better start to her U.S Open series campaign. After reaching the final in 2014, the German went one step better last week, claiming her fourth premier title of the year in Stanford with a hard fought 3 set victory over Karolina Pliskova. Angie also picked up impressive victories over Agnieszka Radwanska and Elina Svitolina on route to the title.
Misaki Doi also competed in Stanford, after defeating CiCi Bellis in the first round, Doi was defeated by Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round. It was a disappointing loss for Doi, as she led 6-1 2-0 and has game points for 3-0. Doi ended up losing 12 straight points.
Angie has a 2-0 head to head record over Doi including a 6-2 6-3 victory in Nuremburg earlier this year. This will be their first meeting on a hard court and it should be another comfortable victory for Angie. The German is one of the form players on the tour right now and should be far too good despite the short turnaround from Stanford.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Misaki Doi in 2 sets
