Angelique Kerber vs Naomi Osaka, U.S Open R1 Preview

US Open, ????? R1 Preview + Prediction
(6) ?? Angelique Kerber vs ?? Naomi Osaka

Angelique Kerber begins her title defense at the U.S Open with a potentially difficult first round clash against Japan’s Naomi Osaka on Tuesday. In 2017, Kerber has rarely been able to rediscover the stunning form that saw her win her second Grand Slam title in New York last year. Kerber seems vulnerable heading into this first round clash, especially against a player like Osaka that has the firepower to hit Kerber off the court. It will be interesting to see how Kerber handle’s Osaka’s game in the first career meeting between the pair.

Angelique Kerber’s preparations for the 2017 U.S Open were not ideal. Kerber won just one match during the U.S Open series, Kerber was beaten by Sloane Stephens in the second round in Toronto and suffered an agonizing first round loss to Ekaterina Makarova in Cincinnati that ended deep in a third set tiebreak. New York is the last chance for Kerber to rediscover her 2016 form at a major event in 2017.

Naomi Osaka has shown glimpses of her best in recent times, but in general Osaka is still learning and is far from being a complete player. Osaka came through the qualifying draw to reach the third round at the Rogers Cup a few weeks ago in what was good preparation for Osaka heading to New York. The quick hard courts in New York suit Osaka’s big game, if she brings her best she could be a threat to Kerber.

Despite the threat Osaka may pose, I think Kerber will get through this match without to much fuss. Osaka has great power but her tactical awareness and consistency throughout matches are far from where they need to be. Kerber enjoys player against big hitters and will be able to absorb most of the power from Osaka’s racquet. Expect a focused Kerber to make a strong start to her title defense over a dangerous opponent.

  1. Yeah Kerber should win here for the reasons you stated. However, I said it before and I’ll say it again now, there is something wrong with her, she is not the player she was, she looks weak. The power is missing in her game, looking like Aga out there. When she plays someone with consistent powerful ground strokes like ehhh Makarova (that tie breaker was epic), she will likely lose. Also, she won’t beat any of the current elite form players, ie… Mugz, Svitolina, Pliskova, Halep, Woz…..hell I’d pick Gavrilova to beat her now….:-)

    • I understand your point.. it seems like she has lost weight and perhaps lost strength? It does remind me a bit of what happened to Aga. Angie certainly doesn’t seem as powerful in 2017
