Angelique Kerber vs Venus Williams Miami QF Preview

Miami Open, ???? QF Match Preview
(1) ?? Angelique Kerber vs (11) ?? Venus Williams

A huge quarter-final clash at the Miami Open sees the top seeded Angelique Kerber come up against an evergreen Venus Williams. Kerber has had the better of Venus in recent times, having won four of their last five matches including a tough straight set win at the semi-final stage of Wimbledon last year. This is an interesting match-up because of the contrast in styles, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top of this one, it should be a good one.

After a rough start to 2017, the newly recrowned world number 1 Angelique Kerber has had a good couple of weeks. Kerber ignited her season with a run to the semi-finals in Dubai and a couple of wins in Indian Wells. In Miami, Kerber has won three consecutive straight set matches to reach the final 8, defeating Ying-Ying Duan, Shelby Rogers and Risa Ozaki. It has been a favourable draw for Kerber and despite some tough moments and not playing her best, Kerber has taken advantage of the situation and seems to be playing better as the tournament progresses, as is often the case with the German.

Venus Williams is continuing her stunning winning ways in 2017, the American is into her third quarter-final of the year and has made at least the quarter-final stage of the three biggest events of the year after making the final at the Australian Open and the quarter-finals at the BNP Paribas Open last week. Venus has advanced to the quarter-final stage in Miami without dropping a set, claiming straight sets wins over Beatriz Haddad Maia, Maria Patricia Tig and finally an impressive 6-3 7-6 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova.

I suspect Kerber will have the edge on this occasion. Kerber has had the better of Venus in recent times, the German has won four of their last five matches and should be solid enough to get the better of Venus here. The conditions in Miami suit Kerber in this match-up. The slow courts will make it hard for Venus to hit through Kerber, but being a hard court Kerber is still to absorb and redirect the pace of Williams. This is a match that Kerber should be winning.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Venus Williams in 3 sets
