Angelique Kerber vs Ying-Ying Duan, Miami R2 Preview

Miami Open, ???? R2 Match Preview
(1) ?? Angelique Kerber vs ?? Ying-Ying Duan

Angelique Kerber will begin her first tournament as the newly re-crowned world number 1 on Friday when she comes up against Ying-Ying Duan in the second round of the Miami Open. Kerber has failed to make a huge impact at the biggest events in 2017, unable to go beyond the round of 16 in Melbourne and Indian Wells. Kerber will keen to change that trend in Miami, if she finds her top form there is no reason why she can’t be a contender for the title.

There is no doubt that Kerber has struggled to replicate her stunning 2016 form in 2017. The world number 1’s best result of the season came in Dubai where she reached the semi-finals, other than that, Kerber’s results have been quite mediocre. Kerber has a fair amount of points to defend in Miami after reaching the semi-final stage of the event in 2016 where she was defeated by eventual champion Victoria Azarenka.

Ying-Ying Duan has made one of her best ever starts to a season but has struggled in the last couple of weeks to maintain that form. Duan made the quarter-finals in Sydney and was involved in an epic battle with Aga Radwanska in Shenzhen where she held match points. However, more recently Duan was beaten by Kostova in the first round of qualifying in Indian Wells. Duan made a solid start to her Miami campaign on Tuesday, claiming a 7-6 6-3 win over Laura Siegemund.

This will be the first career meeting between the pair, Whilst, Duan has generally risen to the occasion when coming up against a top opponent in 2017 and could be a dangerous opponent for Kerber if the German is not on her game. Duan has the firepower to be competitive here but I think Kerber will be too solid and should be good enough to come through here.

Prediction: Angelique Kerber to defeat Ying-Ying Duan in 2 sets
