Ashleigh Barty vs Camila Giorgi, Birmingham QF Preview

WTA Aegon Classic, ?? Birmingham QF Preview
QF #4: ?? Ashleigh Barty vs (Q) ?? Camila Giorgi

Friday’s fourth and final quarter-final of the day at the Aegon Classic looms as the most open match of the day where a big opportunity presents itself to both Ashleigh Barty and Camila Giorgi to make a rare semi-final appearance at a premier level event. Grass is the preferred surface of both Barty and Giorgi, both have been playing great tennis this week and head into this clash full of confidence, this has the makings of a high quality, tight contest between two powerful strikers.

Ashleigh Barty has made back-to-back quarter-final appearances to start her grass court swing after reaching the final 8 in Nottingham last week. Barty has overcome two strong tests in Birmingham to advance to the final 8, starting with a 7-5 7-6 win over Markéta Vondroušová before eliminating the 8th seeded Barbora Strycova courtesy of a 6-3 3-6 6-1 victory. Barty continues to improve in 2017, the next step for the Aussie is do some damage at the business end of a big event, the opportunity to do just that is there for Barty this week in Birmingham.

Camila Giorgi has generally been a disappointment in 2017, as she has been throughout her career. However, as is the case with Giorgi, she can randomly hit from and that has been true in Birmingham this week. Giorgi has already won 5 matches this week after successfully moving through the qualifying draw. In the main draw, Giorgi started off with a solid 6-3 7-6 win over Natalia Vikhlyantseva before claiming one of her biggest wins of the year by defeating the second seeded Elina Svitolina 6-4 4-6 6-2. Giorgi’s ability to bounce back from a disappointing end to the second set was impressive.

The only previous meeting between Barty and Giorgi took place on clay in Strasbourg a couple of months ago, Barty claimed a commanding 6-3 6-0, expect Friday’s quarter-final in Birmingham to be much closer!

I’m going to give Giorgi the edge here. The Italian is extremely dangerous when she gets going and will be full of confidence after a big win over Svitolina on Thursday. Barty and Giorgi both have big games but Giorgi is slightly more nimble and her top level on this surface is probably superior to that of Barty. One never quite knows what to expect of Giorgi, whilst Barty in generally quite solid, given Giorgi’s form this week and the surface potentially favouring her in this match-up, I think she will sneak through this one.

Prediction: Camila Giorgi to defeat Ashleigh Barty in 3 sets
