Ashleigh Barty vs Petra Martic, Miami R3 Preview

Miami Open, ????? R3 Preview
?? (21) Ashleigh Barty vs. ?? Petra Martic

An interesting third round clash from the Miami Open on Sunday sees the 21st seeded Ashleigh Barty take on an in form Petra Martic. This will be the first career meeting between Barty and Martic, an exciting match-up between two very versatile players. Martic continues to impress at the biggest events, will she make another big move and reach the second week of yet another major tournament?

Ash Barty has not played much tennis in the last couple of months. In fact, Barty’s second round with over Claire Liu in Miami was the Australian’s first tour level victory since the Australian Open in January. Barty arrives in Miami on the back of a disappointing opening round exit at the BNP Paribas Open where she lost to Maria Sakkari in straight sets. Barty received a favourable draw in Miami, an opening round bye before defeating Liu 6-0 7-6, a much needed win for Barty. The 21st seed will face a tough test on Sunday against Martic, an opponent that is in terrific form right now.

Petra Martic is on the verge of cracking into the top 30 in the WTA rankings for the first time and deservedly so. Martic’s success at the biggest events have been well documented over the last 12 months, Martic has reached the second week at Roland Garros, Wimbledon, the Australian Open and Indian Wells in the last year. Martic is now 1 win away from adding Miami to that list. Martic started her Miami Open campaign with a straight set win over Lauren Davis before coming from a set and a break down to defeat Kristina Mladenovic. The Croatian’s composure and execution under real pressure in the second set against Mladenovic was impressive.

It will be fascinating to see how this match-up pans out, expect a tight match between two highly skilled opponents.
