Toronto QF: Belinda Bencic vs (5) Ana Ivanovic
The fourth and final quarter-final in Toronto sees Belinda Bencic come up against Ana Ivanovic for a place in the semi-finals at the Rogers Cup. Ivanovic thumped Bencic in their only previous meeting late last year, it will be interesting to see if Belinda can turn that result around on Friday evening, her recent form suggests that she can.
Bencic has had a wonderful week in Toronto, defeating three high quality opponents on route to the final eight. Belinda fought past Eugenie Bouchard in the opening round before picking up her third victory in a row over Caroline Wozniacki in two tight sets. The talented 18-year-old advanced to the final eight with a topsy-turvy 6-1 1-6 7-6 victory over Sabine Lisicki, avenging her loss to the German a couple of months ago.
Ana Ivanovic’s route to the final eight has been far more straightforward and far less impressive. Ivanovic dismissed Olga Govortsova and Polona Hercog in straight sets, however she was far from convincing in both matches. Ana will need to really raise her level when she comes up against an in form Bencic on Friday night.
Ana won the only previous encounter between the pair, a comfortable 6-2 6-1 victory in the first round in Beijing last year. Bencic has significantly improved since that encounter, the youngster has made a habit of avenging previous losses to quality opponents this year.
Bencic enters this match with momentum on her side, the 18-year-old has been far more consistent this year and her consistent baseline game can certainly trouble Ivanovic. You never quite know what to expect from Ana, but based on current form I like Belinda’s chances in this one. Bencic’s game is far more solid at the moment.
Prediction: Belinda Bencic to defeat Ana Ivanovic in 2 sets
