Cincinnati R3: Belinda Bencic vs (7) Lucie Safarova
An exciting third round matchup at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati sees last week’s Rogers Cup champion Belinda Bencic take on Lucie Safarova. Bencic will be aiming for her 9th victory in row in this one, whilst Safarova will be desperate to pick up back-to-back victories for the first time since Wimbledon with the final Grand Slam of the year just around the corner.
Belinda’s Bencic’s stunning form has continued at the Western & Southern Open. After defeating 4 top 10 players (Williams, Halep, Wozniacki and Ivanovic) on route to the biggest title of her career last week at the Rogers Cup, Bencic has picked up impressive straight set victories over Angelique Kerber and Flavia Pennetta in Cincinnati. It was a clinical display by Bencic against Pennetta on Wednesday, the 18-year-old did not face a break point all match. Bencic seemingly has an endless supply of energy, how long until all the matches finally take their toll on Belinda?
Lucie Safarova picked up her first victory of the U.S Open Series on Wednesday, a 6-4 7-5 victory over CoCo Vandeweghe, avenging her loss to the American at Wimbledon earlier this year. Surprisingly, Lucie’s hard court form has been mostly disappointing in season 2015, it is important for Lucie to gather some momentum in Cincinnati with the U.S Open just around the corner.
In their only previous meeting: Safarova defeated Bencic 3-6 6-4 6-2 in Tokyo last year. Bencic has improved markedly since that match and is currently riding a wave of momentum. However all good things must come to an end, I like Lucie’s chances in this one. Bencic has played so much tennis in the last week whilst Safarova should be relatively fresh. The quick conditions in Cincinnati suit both ladies so this should be a good contest but Lucie should ultimately outlast Belinda.
