Belinda Bencic vs Maria Sharapova, Australian Open R4 Preview

Australian Open R4: (12) Belinda Bencic vs (5) Maria Sharapova

Sunday’s highest profile fourth round clash at Melbourne park sees Belinda Bencic and Maria Sharapova go head-to-head for the first time, a much anticipated match-up among followers of the WTA. Both Sharapova and Bencic have showed reasonable form this week and both managed to survive a slight scare in the third round, both will know that they will need to really step up their level heading into this tough fourth round clash.

Belinda Bencic’s form hasn’t been spectacular this week but she has been mature enough to get the job done and advance to the second week at the Australian Open for the first time in her young career. Bencic started the week with reasonably comfortable straight set victories over Alison Riske and Timea Babos before coming from a set down to defeat Kateryna Bondarenko 4-6 6-2 6-4. Bencic will enter this match full of confidence, having already beaten the best players in the world, including Serena Williams (something Sharapova hasn’t done for over a decade).

Maria Sharapova also cruised through her first two matches in Melbourne before being pushed to three sets in her third round match. Maria started the week with commanding straight set victories over Nao Hibino and Aliaksandra Sasnovich before surprisingly being pushed to three sets by Lauren Davis where she ultimately prevailed 6-1 6-7 6-0. Although Maria ended win the deciding set very comfortably, the fact that she was beaten by Davis in a tiebreaker is a little bit concerning moving forward. Maria will need to play much better tennis on Sunday if she wants to advance any further in Melbourne.

It is surprising that it has taken so long for these two to go head-to-head, it will be interesting to see how these two match up against each other. Obviously Maria has more firepower and a stronger serve, however Bencic is more consistent from the baseline and has a much more consistent serve. The contrast in styles should make for a fascinating encounter.

I believe Bencic will have the edge on this occasion. Bencic loves a big stage and I’m certain she will be really looking forward to playing Sharapova. I’m still not certain where Sharapova’s level is at right now and I really question her ability to hit through Bencic in a long tough match, Bencic has a wonderful record in three set matches and I think that will continue here.

Prediction: Belinda Bencic to defeat Maria Sharapova in 3 sets

  1. Sharapova in 2. Maria is so much more experienced and knows when she has to step up her game.
Bencic still wasn’t at her best in this year, too.

    • Bencic has also played big matches, don’t think experience is a big factor here. I really think Bencic has a strong chance, should be close

  2. WTAaddict is an emotional man. He would argue to death to protect his favourite players. Bencic was lucky to Bondarenko. She was outplayed for a few moments when Bondarenko did not make so many unforced errors.

I don’t think Sharapova will give her any chances when it needs to be done. The prediction of WTA addict is based on Sharapova to hit 50 unforced errors and 15 double faults. Do you think it will happen? Bencic will struggle to deal with Sharapova.

Sharapova in 2. Sharapova in 3 if she flops like her previous match. Again, will that happen? It is very unlikely.

    • Then how does she keep losing to Wozniacki, based on what you’re saying she will never lose to Wozniacki.

Yes I know my prediction is reliant on Maria hitting a lot of unforced errors but that is hardly expecting something extraordinary.

      • Please check the H2H Sharapova is leading 6-2 over Wozniacki. Is this consider always lose to someone? I think it is the other way round.

For your records, 2014 was a bad year for Sharapova. She had shoulder injuries even prior to the year end final. In 2014, Wozniacki also played extremely well. They played three sets. So, it was not so bad to lose in 3 after having shoulder injuries.

Based on the stats, skills and experiences, it is Sharapova to lose. You expect Bencic plays like Wozniacki (pushing!) therefore you also assume Sharapova will be pushed to lose. Well, time will tell but this Sharapova is injury free.

        • She has clearly struggled against her in recent times, I agree that Sharapova is the favourite and can see your arguments.

          We will see 🙂

    • I also think WTAaddict predicts more with heart over head.
Tbh, I have seen blogs, in which the writer is more neutral.
It’s okay, but he should know that he has to expect completely different opinions and at least, I’m not shy to express them.

      • I find that quite offensive.. I am not stupid, there are many people reading this and I don’t want to embarrass myself, I always predict with my head… not my heart.

      • It’s only my impression. I’m not the only one who frequently doubt whether you predict with your head only. Has to mean something…

  3. Sharapova’s second set loss to Davis, ranked 103, was a give away or call it a practice session before a big match. At the third set she demolished her 6-0. Bencic lost/retired to Puig in Sydney, 0-6 first set, and lost to Crawford, ranked 107, in Brisbane two weeks ago. Sharapova only lost to the top 20 players in the last 6 months except for that retirement against Strykova last Sept2015. Lost to Kvitova, Serena, Safarova, Navarro, Kuznetsova. All top 20 experienced players.

    Sharapova in 2 sets.

    • Well Bencic is also a top 20 player, so that doesn’t really support your argument.

I agree that Bencic’s form hasn’t been great but neither has Maria’s. Both will need to step it up here

      • You didn’t get it. Sharapova has not lost to players ranked over 100 in the last 6 months. Bencic did lost to several low ranked players. Anyway, already got my winnings.

If you do betting, your prediction was high risk.

  4. Guys relax. Enjoy the games. I think u do a great job wtaaddict. Jocas shut up. So many times I’ve seen u predict games in the past and uve been wrong. So many times dude. Anyways lets go bencic!!

    • She hits more winners and aces than unforced errors. Was only bad timing because she made most of her mistakes when it matters.
Better do not look on her break point convertion…
Maybe now an accomplishment? She was better than Bencic and deserved the win today.

      • Okay.. congrats to her. She didn’t play very well IMO. Second serve was not at all reliable and she made many basic errors and on big points. She will get slaughtered by Serena.
