Saturday’s second rubber between Italy and France sees Camila Giorgi take on Alize Cornet in what promises to be an intriguing battle in Genoa.
Alize Cornet arrives in Italy on the back of a solid Australian Summer. Alize played great tennis at the Hopman Cup, winning all three of her singles matches, once again showing that she relishes the opportunity to represent her country. Alize’s draw in Melbourne was quite brutal, she was eliminated in the third round by 2014 finalist Dominika Cibulkova.
Camila Giorgi’s form over the Australian summer was typically erratic, the Italian played some horrendous tennis in Hobart before succumbing to Venus WIlliams in the third round in Melbourne despite leading by a set and a break. Giorgi’s serve doesn’t seem to have improved at all during the off season, statistics would suggest that it has actually gotten worse.
This will be the fourth career meeting between these two, Cornet currently has a 2-1 head to head lead over the Italian. All three of their previous encounters have gone the distance, all three have featured tight deciding sets. Camila Giorgi won their most recent match, 6-4 1-6 6-3 in Strasbourg last year, the only match they have played on clay.
This match is extremely hard to predict but i’m going to side with Alize as she is the more experienced and reliable of the two in situations like this. Cornet does seem to play better when she is representing her nation and will thrive under the hostile atmosphere.
Prediction: Alize Cornet to defeat Camila Giorgi in 3 sets
