Cincinnati R1: (10) Carla Suarez Navarro vs Sloane Stephens
An intriguing first round matchup at the Western & Southern Open sees Carla Suarez Navarro take on Sloane Stephens. Both ladies arrive in Cincinnati on the back of first round exits in Toronto and will be keen to avoid consecutive first round losses with the U.S Open just around the corner.
Carla Suarez Navarro has made a disappointing start to the U.S Open series. The Spaniard has suffered back-to-back first up exits in Stanford and Toronto. Carla was defeated by Alison Riske in straight sets in Stanford before suffering a tough three set loss to Alize Cornet in Toronto. Carla is still in a prime to position to reach the WTA Finals but will need to quickly turn her form around before New York.
Sloane Stephens made a perfect start to her U.S Open series, claiming an elusive first career title in Washington. The American did not drop a set on route to the title in what was a great week for Sloane. However the American couldn’t bring her form to Toronto, knocked out in the first round by Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets.
Sloane defeated Carla 6-1 7-5 earlier this year in Eastbourne, their only previous encounter. This is a really close matchup, but the quicker conditions in Cincinnati should give the American the edge. Sloane has the weapons to trouble Carla on this surface, the match will be on the American’s racquet and I like her chances here.
