Caroline Garcia vs Shuai Peng, Miami R2 Preview

Miami Open, ???? R2 Match Preview
(21) ?? Caroline Garcia vs ?? Shuai Peng

A fascinating second round match-up at the Miami Open sees Caroline Garcia come up against Shuai Peng. The 22nd seeded Garcia received a bye through the opening round and will face a tough task against an in-form Peng Shuai in her opening match in Miami. Caroline Garcia also brings good form into Miami, the Frenchwoman won a couple of matches in Indian Wells last week, but notably she beat Johanna Konta in a tough three set match, a confidence boosting win for Garcia.

Caroline Garcia has made a mostly disappointing start to the season. The Frenchwoman has failed to go on a deep run at a tournament in 2017, still really struggling with inconsistencies in her game. Garcia showed last week in Indian Wells that her best is very good, as she outlasted Johanna Konta in a tight three set match which ended in a decisive tiebreak. Garcia was unable to keep her momentum going in the next round, comprehensively beaten by Svetlana Kuznetsova in the round of 16.

Shuai Peng has already gone on a few deep runs in 2017, including a run to the round of 16 in Indian Wells, coming through the qualifying draw. Peng claimed three notable main draw victories in Indian Wells, starting with a tight three set win over Lesia Tsurenko, before impressively moving past Ana Konjuh and Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets. Peng was ultimately beaten by Venus Williams in three sets, from a set up. Peng will be hoping for another good week in Miami.

The head-to-head record between Garcia and Peng is split at 1 win apiece. The most recent match between the pair took place in Beijing last year, Garcia won an extremely tight match that ended in a third set tiebreaker, highlighting just how close this match-up is.

There really is little to separate these two heading into this second round match in Miami. Peng Shuai is probably more stable and consistent throughout matches but Caroline Garcia’s best is better. Garcia has more behind her serve and is probably more effective at the net. I’m going to give the slight edge to Garcia here, her win over Konta last week was a good sign moving forward.

Prediction: Caroline Garcia to defeat Shuai Peng in 3 sets
