Tokyo R2: (1) Caroline Wozniacki vs (Q) Ana Konjuh
2014 Toray Pan Pacific Open Runner-up Caroline Wozniacki will kick-start her 2015 campaign on Wednesday evening when she comes up against Croatian qualifier Ana Konjuh. Wozniacki really struggled throughout the North American summer, the Dane will be hoping to put the disappointment behind her and end the year on a high as she looks to once again qualify for the WTA Final in Singapore.
An array of injuries held Caroline Wozniacki back during the North American summer. The Dane never really got going, and was never at her best. Wozniacki suffered three first round exits in the lead up to New York where she would eventually succumb to Petra Cetkovska in the second round. Wozniacki is still an outside chance to reach the WTA Finals in Singapore, the Dane is currently ranked 14th in the Race to Singapore and will need a big couple of weeks if she is to qualify for the season ending finale.
Ana Konjuh breezed through the qualifying draw in Tokyo without dropping a set. The Croatian made a positive start in the main draw, upsetting Kristina Mladenovic 6-0 3-6 6-3 to set up a second round clash with the Danish top seed. Konjuh has a powerful game which can challenge a vulnerable Wozniacki, however the Croatian will need to be at her best if she is to cause a major upset.
In the only previous encounter between the pair, it was Wozniacki who prevailed 6-3 6-0 at Wimbledon last year. It’s going to be a tough ask for Konjuh to turn that result around, this match should be a little more competitive however the end result should remain the same.
