St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy, R2 Preview
?? (1) Caroline Wozniacki vs ?? (wc) Anastasia Potapova
Caroline Wozniacki is set to make a surprising appearance in St. Petersburg less than a week after capturing a maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. Wozniacki is on top of women’s tennis right now. The Dane finally broke her Grand Slam duck in Melbourne and is back to number 1 in the world, things could not be any better for Wozniacki right now. Instead of taking time off to celebrate, Wozniacki is straight back to work, the top seed will begin her St. Petersburg campaign with a second round clash against local wild card Anastasia Potapova after receiving a bye through the opening round.
It will be interesting to see just how committed to the St. Petersburg event Wozniacki really is. One suspects she will be granted a huge appearance fee, she will probably be required to complete 1 match in order to receive this fee. It would have seemed logical for Wozniacki to pull out of this event after the draining two weeks she had in Melbourne, the biggest two weeks of her long tennis career. Wozniacki has always been a hard worker, so there is no reason why winning a Grand Slam will see her drastically change the way she goes about her business.
Anastasia Potapova claimed a solid straight set win over Tatjana Maria to book her spot in the second round in St. Petersburg. Potapova defeated Tatjana Maria 6-2 6-4, one of the bigger wins of the 16-year-old’s career.
This will be the first career meeting between the pair. The eyes of the tennis world will be on Caroline Wozniacki as she competes for the first time since winning her maiden Grand Slam title in Melbourne.
