Qatar Total Open, ?? Doha QF Preview
?? (1) Caroline Wozniacki vs ?? (8) Angelique Kerber

A blockbuster quarter-final clash at the Qatar Total Open sees two newly crowned Grand Slam champions go head-to-head as Caroline Wozniacki takes on Angelique Kerber. For so long Wozniacki and Kerber were two of the better players to have never won a Grand Slam title, it seemed the pair would never claim the ultimate glory in tennis. However, the last few years has all that change. The pair will now go head-to-head both as Grand Slam champions for the first time. These two have a long history and know each other very well, can Kerber continue her recent dominance of Wozniacki?

Caroline Wozniacki is on top of the world right now. The newly crowned Australian Open champion and world number 1 has made a good start to her Doha campaign. Wozniacki thrashed Carina Witthoeft in the opening round before overcoming a tough test from Monica Niculescu, winning 7-5 6-1. There was some drama in Wozniacki’s win over Niculescu, Wozniacki went from 4-1 to 4-5 in the opening set and became frustrated with Niculescu’s grunting and supposed gamesmanship. Wozniacki managed to regain her focus to win 8 of the next 9 games and maintain her perfect record over the Romanian.

Angelique Kerber has moved past a couple of tough opponents to reach the quarter-final stage in Doha. Kerber started the week with a 6-4 6-1 win over Sam Stosur before fighting from a set down to defeat Johanna Konta 1-6 6-1 6-3. Kerber’s win over Konta was particularly impressive, Konta threw everything at Kerber but the German showed her trademark steely determination to overrun the Brit. Kerber’s 2018 form has been as impressive as anyone, given the calibre of opponents Kerber has faced and overcome in 2018, I’d say she has actually been the most impressive player this year.

Kerber holds an 8-5 head-to-head record over Wozniacki. In recent times, Kerber has been particularly successful in this match-up having won the last 2 matches between the pair and 5 of the last 7. Kerber easily beat Wozniacki in their most recent match, 6-4 6-3 at the semi-final stage of the 2016 U.S Open.
